ATS Checker vs Scanner vs Builder: Which One You Need
A checker scores a resume file, a scanner shows you the text a parser extracted from it, and a builder produces the file in the first place. Most people need the scanner first, the checker second, and a builder only if Word is failing them; every builder export still needs the first two.

An ATS checker scores a resume file against a set of rules, an ATS scanner shows you the text a parser extracted from the file, and an ATS resume builder produces the file. They answer three different questions: is this file good by someone’s rules, what will the ATS actually read from it, and how do I make a file at all. Most job seekers need the scanner first, because it proves or disproves everything the other two say; the checker second, for a fix list; and a builder only if Word or Google Docs cannot give them a clean single-column file, which is rare. The “ATS checker vs scanner” question has one complication: vendors use “scanner” for two unrelated things, and this page separates them.
This page is research-based. The tool descriptions come from the tools’ public pages read in September 2026 and from the one documented hands-on run in which we ran one resume through eight checkers.1 ATS Score Checker, which publishes this page, is a checker and a scanner and not a builder, so the builder section has no product of ours to sell.
What is the difference between an ATS checker, a scanner and a builder?
Input, output and the question answered differ; the same file can go through all three.
| Checker | Scanner | Builder | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you give it | A finished file (PDF, DOCX, sometimes pasted text) | A finished file | Your details, typed into forms |
| What it gives back | A score and findings | The extracted text, in the order a parser read it | A file, from a template |
| Question it answers | Is this file good by the tool’s rules? | What will the ATS read from this file? | How do I get a file at all? |
| What it cannot tell you | Whether its rules match the ATS you are applying through | Whether the content is any good | Whether its own export parses cleanly outside its walls |
| How it usually charges | Score free, reasons paid | Often behind an account; rarely sold on its own | Free to build, paid to download PDF or Word |
| Examples from our hub | Enhancv, MyPerfectResume, GoodSpace, 1MillionResume, ours | Resume Worded’s parse view, our “What the ATS read” tab | Enhancv, Zety, Resume.io, Kickresume, Novoresume, and Word or Google Docs |
The naming confusion: Jobscan, SkillSyncer and Nodeflair call themselves scanners, and what they do is match your resume’s words against one pasted job description. That is a fourth thing, a keyword-match tool, and it is neither a parse view nor a general checker. When this page says scanner, it means the parse view. When a vendor says scanner, ask which of the two it means.
If you want the checker and the parse view on one screen for your own file, run the free ATS resume checker here; the score, every check with its evidence and the extracted text come back together, with no account.
When do you need an ATS scanner?
First, and every time the layout changes. The scanner answers the one question no score can: did the parser read the file the way you see it? Read left to right, two columns interleave; text in a header or footer is dropped or duplicated by several parsers; a table around experience merges or splits jobs; an icon font comes out as private-use characters; a scanned or design-tool PDF with no text layer comes out as nothing. Greenhouse’s own help article on failed parses names columns, tables, complex layouts, contact details in the header and spacing between letters as causes, and Textkernel’s study of column CVs moved clean renders from 62% to 90%, which still leaves one in ten reading wrongly.2 Our rubric carries those as checks P1, P6, P7, P9, P10, P11 and P12.
The reason to put the scanner first is what happened in our run: on a fresher resume built with two columns, a photo, a contact band, a marks table and skill bars, none of the eight checkers named a single one of those hazards.1 A score cannot flag what its rules do not look for. The parse view shows the interleaved lines whether or not any rule exists, and the two-column resume and ATS section shows what that looks like.
Who has a scanner: Resume Worded shows extracted text after an account; ours shows it in the “What the ATS read” tab without one. Enhancv shows a parse percentage, not the text. No other tool on our hub page describes showing the text. A rough free stand-in is Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C in your PDF reader and a paste into Notepad: if the lines come out in the wrong order there, a parser is likely to read them that way too.
When do you need an ATS checker?
After the parse is clean, when you want a fix list rather than a diagnosis. A checker’s value is the checklist: standard headings, dates on every role, a skills section with exact terms, an abbreviation spelled out once, a verb and a number in each bullet, a summary under 60 words, one date format, no first-person pronouns. Those are our checks P18, P19, F1, F2, I1, I2, I6, L4 and L3, and most checkers cover some version of them.
The criterion that separates checkers is whether each finding shows the text it came from. In our run, Enhancv reported two misspellings that were not in the file, 1MillionResume flagged a pronoun in a file with no pronouns and hid the evidence behind an upgrade, and MyPerfectResume returned counts with no text.1 A finding you can see is a finding you can dispute; a count is a sales number. The second criterion is whether the score is deterministic and its weights are public, because a checker whose number moves between runs of the same file (cxolanes did, in our run) is not measuring the file.
A checker is also the wrong tool for a question it does not ask. None of the tools on our hub page except ours checks for a photo, a date of birth, a father’s name, a 10th/12th marks table, a declaration block, or the CTC and notice period line that Naukri Resdex filters on. If those matter to you, and for an Indian private-sector application they do, the checker has to know India.
When do you need an ATS resume builder?
When you cannot produce a clean single-column file yourself, or when you want the typing done for you; the file it makes still needs the scanner and the checker. “ATS resume builder” and “ATS friendly resume builder” are searched far more often than “ATS checker vs scanner”, and the results are mostly paid builders: Enhancv, Zety and Resume.io, with Kickresume and Novoresume close behind. Their model is the same: build and preview free, download PDF or Word on a subscription, with a checker inside that grades the builder’s own templates. The prices reported in 2026 run from about $16.50 a month at Enhancv to a $1.95 trial followed by $25.95 a month at Zety, and none lists a rupee price.3
That is not a reason to avoid them. It is a reason to treat the export like any other file. Three things a builder can do to a resume that its own checker will not mention:
- Two columns or a sidebar. Many builder templates put skills and contact details in a column. Read left to right, the columns interleave in some parsers (check P9). If you keep a sidebar, put only skills and links in it, never experience.
- Icon fonts and decorative headers. A phone icon in place of the word “Phone” extracts as a private-use character (check P6); a name in a header band is dropped by parsers that skip headers (check P12); letter-spaced headings become one word per letter (check P7).
- An image export. A design-tool export with no text layer, or a scan of a printout, parses as nothing (check P1). The free plan that exports only plain text is, oddly, the safest export for a parser and the worst for a human.
Word and Google Docs are builders too, and free. A single-column document with Experience, Education, Skills and Projects as headings on their own lines, contact details as plain text at the top of page one, Month YYYY on every role and no tables around anything is the whole specification, and it takes twenty minutes. There is no downloadable template on this site yet; the ATS-friendly resume pages describe the specification instead.
ATS checker vs scanner vs builder: the same criteria for all three
Held to the same questions, each type has a place and a blind spot.
| Criterion | Checker | Scanner | Builder |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proves the parse | Only if it shows extracted text | Yes, by definition | No; its checker grades its own template |
| Gives a fix list | Yes; quality varies with the evidence shown | No; you read the problem yourself | Suggestions inside the editor, usually paid to apply and download |
| Needs a job description | No (keyword-match tools do) | No | No |
| Deterministic | Some; most do not say | Yes, extraction is mechanical | Not applicable |
| Weights published | Rarely | Not applicable | No |
| India conventions | Only ours, of the tools on our hub page | Shows a marks table’s damage but does not name it | Templates often add a photo slot |
| Typical cost | Score free, reasons ₹99 a scan to about $50 a month | Account, or free in ours | $1.95 trial to about $26 a month |
| Failure mode | Findings you cannot verify | None, if you actually read it | A pretty file that interleaves |
Which one do you need?
Pick by where you are, not by which search phrase you typed.
| You are | Start with | Then | Skip |
|---|---|---|---|
| A fresher with the campus WhatsApp template | Scanner: see whether the two columns and the marks table interleave | Checker in fresher mode for headings, dates, projects as experience | A paid builder; rebuild in Word in one column |
| Experienced, resume in Word, applying on Naukri | Checker for findability: skills as exact terms, abbreviations spelled out, CTC and notice period stated | Update the Naukri profile fields to match, because Resdex searches those | Nothing; the scanner is a quick confirmation on a plain Word file |
| Applying to one MNC or GCC posting via Workday or Greenhouse | Checker with a job-description tab, or a keyword-match tool | Scanner on the final PDF | A builder, unless the file is a mess |
| Resume made in Canva, Figma or a builder template | Scanner first: does a text layer exist, do the columns interleave | Checker for the rest | Trusting the builder’s own score |
| Government or PSU application | Checker in Govt/PSU mode, so the photo, DOB and declaration flags read correctly | Scanner if the form is a table-heavy format | Private-sector advice to delete the photo |
Can one tool be all three?
A checker and a scanner can share a screen; a builder that checks its own output is a conflict of interest, not a combination. ATS Score Checker is the first two: a score with every check, its evidence and its points, a “What the ATS read” tab with the extracted text in reading order, and a job-description tab, all free without an account. It does not build files. Enhancv, Zety and Kickresume are builders with a checker attached, and as far as their pages say, those checkers grade content and do not show the parse of their own export. Jobscan is a keyword-match tool with formatting flags, behind an account.
The honest way to combine them is in sequence: build wherever you like, scan the export, fix the layout until the parse is clean, then run the checker for the content.
What should you do first?
Scan the file you would actually send, today, before changing a word. If the extracted text reads in order with your name, phone, email, headings and dates intact, the layout is fine and the checker’s findings are the work. If it does not, no builder template and no score will fix that, and the layout is the work.
The hub page Best Free ATS Resume Checkers in India (2026) holds all checkers compared on nine criteria, including which ones show the parsed text. Whichever tools you use, end by re-checking the file after each change; the parse moves with the layout, and the score follows it.

Questions this article answers
What is the difference between an ATS checker and an ATS scanner?
A checker gives your file a score against its own rules. A scanner shows what a parser extracted from the file, in reading order, so you can see interleaved columns or a missing phone number yourself. Vendors also use 'scanner' for keyword-match tools such as Jobscan, which is a third thing.
Do I need an ATS resume builder?
Only if you cannot make a clean single-column file in Word or Google Docs, which most people can. 'ATS resume builder' searches are mostly served by paid builders such as Enhancv, Zety and Resume.io, and the file they export still needs a scan and a check like any other.
Is an ATS friendly resume builder enough on its own?
No. A builder's own checker grades its own templates. Export the PDF, look at the extracted text and run it through an outside checker. If the columns interleave in the parse, the template is not ATS friendly whatever its label says.
Which is free: checker, scanner or builder?
Checkers are usually free for a score and paid for the reasons; scanners are rare and often behind an account; builders are free to build and paid to download. ATS Score Checker is a free checker and scanner in one, with no builder.
ATS checker, scanner aur builder mein kya farak hai?
Checker file ko score deta hai, scanner dikhata hai parser ne file se kya padha, builder file banata hai. Pehle scanner se parse dekho, phir checker se fix list lo; builder tabhi jab Word se clean file na ban rahi ho.
